Observe the parent and child in face-to-face interaction.
Have the parent hold the child in front of him and talk to the child.
The baby will look at the parent’s eyes, but also gaze at the hair and contours of the face.
Help parents understand that one of the things the child is learning is pattern recognition. There is a different pattern to each face and each voice. One way the child comes to differentiate people is through recognition of these patterns.
