Observe the infant when fussy (not crying too intensely) when held by an adult.
No elicitation needed.
The quieting voice of the adult attracts the infant’s attention and calms her.
Help parents understand how the child learns self-comforting first by learning how her parents comfort her. Encourage parents to watch and listen to the child’s responses to their various efforts to calm her.
