Observe the infant and adult during daily activities.
When the infant cries observe how she responds to the adult’s calming techniques.
Observe which strategies and how many strategies are needed for the child to calm.
Help parents understand the importance of quick responsiveness to the infant’s distress. This teaches the child that her communications are effective. It also helps the infant learn she can trust the adult to meet her needs.
