Names scribbles as representing something

Situations for Observation of Skill

Provide paper, crayons and children’s scissors.

Elicitation Strategy

Ask the child to make a picture. The adult can ask, “What are you drawing?” When the drawing is complete, the adult can show the child how to snip some fringe around the drawing.

Behavior Observed

See if the child assigns meaning to his marks. This is an indication that the child is beginning to use lines to represent something.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Lines and marks are now starting to represent something to the child.
