Combines sand, water for tactile play

Situations for Observation of Skill

Provide a pitcher of water when the child is playing in a sand table or outdoors in a sand box.

Elicitation Strategy

If there is an outdoor sand box, add some water and build “mountains” or “hills” with the wet sand.

Behavior Observed

Three-dimensional representations are also beginning as the child manipulates tactile materials.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Encourage early childhood educators and parents to let children experiment with combining sand and water. Children will learn how combining different amounts of materials results in different textures and sensory sensations. Encourage children to make familiar items, such as “little cakes.”
