Observe the child’s use of gestures and words as she interacts with others.
No elicitation needed.
The toddler says what she wants the other person to do; drags the person to what she wants them to do; or uses gestures to point to what she wants.
Encourage early childhood educators and parents to read the child’s cues and give them some, but not all, control. The child needs to learn that she can have some of what she wants, but not all. Keep a balance between the adult and child, so neither is in complete control.
