Attempts to blow nose

Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the child when he needs a tissue (usually a common occurrence with little ones).

Elicitation Strategy

The adult hands the child a tissue and asks him to “blow.”

Behavior Observed

The child understands how to blow air through the nose, though may not do so sufficiently to do the job needed.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Include tissues, diapers, washcloths, etc. in dramatic play to encourage practice of daily life skills on dolls. Remind the child to take care of his own needs, by offering the necessary materials, such as tissues, washcloths without telling the child what to do. Just handing the child a tissue tells the child the need, but gives the child the independence to follow through.
