Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the child in play interactions with others and/or during daily routines with the adult.

Elicitation Strategy

No elicitation needed for conversation during play.

Behavior Observed

If playing with another child, the child talks and responds to what the other child says, but she primarily comments on what she is doing.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Give parents examples of ways to scaffold a conversation: • Say what you are doing or what you like; • Comment on the child’s action; • Give the child a choice for the next comment e.g., “Do you want X or Y?” • Ask the child a simple question.
