Points to an object when asked, “Which one is…” (a cow, big, etc.)

Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the adult and child reading a book.

Elicitation Strategy

The adult asks the child a “Which one is…?” question about the pictures on the page.

Behavior Observed

The child looks at several objects and makes a determination about which picture fits named characteristics.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Encourage early childhood educators and parents to give the child choices (e.g., “Which shirt do you want to wear?”). This helps her learn this question structure, and also lets the child have a feeling of control in decision-making.
