Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the child in play with the adult. Listen for the child’s sentence length and structure.

Elicitation Strategy

To elicit double subjects, ask, “Tell me some things I can build with the blocks.” Or “What do you want to eat and drink?”

Behavior Observed

The child uses possessives and connects words with and.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Encourage parents to play and read books with the child. Encourage early childhood educators and parents to model the use of possessives and connecting words when reading or playing. For example, “Look. The bear is holding two things. What has he got in his paws?”
