“Reads” to dolls, stuffed animals or self

Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the child and adult reading familiar books together.

Elicitation Strategy

The adult provides dolls or stuffed animals for the child and requests that the child read to them.

Behavior Observed

The child remembers familiar stories, phrases and lines from known books. She “reads” the pictures to narrate the story.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Early childhood educators and parents can give children practice pretending to read by asking them to read the adult or a doll a book. Including books in play is a non-stressful way to stimulate pretend reading. Also encourage adults to talk about the children’s favorite books. Ask them what happens in the story and who they like in the book. Provide parents with names of authors and good predictable books that are easy for children to remember.
