Observe the child and adult reading familiar books together.
The adult reads some of the familiar text and pauses for the child to fill in the missing words or phrases.
When the adult reads a very familiar book and pauses, the child remembers key words and phrases to complete a line.
Early childhood educators and parents can give children practice pretending to read by asking them to read the adult or a doll a book. Including books in play is a non-stressful way to stimulate pretend reading. Also encourage adults to talk about the children’s favorite books. Ask them what happens in the story and who they like in the book. Provide parents with names of authors and good predictable books that are easy for children to remember.
