Points to and labels pictures on billboards, cereal boxes, etc. in the environment

Situations for Observation of Skill

Interview the parent about the child’s observations of picture meanings.

Elicitation Strategy

Ask adults about the pictures the child notices in the home and community. Does the child explain the meaning of the pictures?

Behavior Observed

The child points to pictures and says what the pictures mean. For example, the child points to the picture of a bowl of cereal on the box and says, “Cheerios.”

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Encourage adults to point out and explain the meaning of various pictures that are found in many places. Children feel pride when they can “read” signs.
