Observe the child with markers and magic drawing boards, an iPad, or a sensory box with sand, rice, or other similar texture.
The adult models drawing a horizontal line on paper.
The child imitates horizontal strokes.
Encourage early childhood educators and parents to give children many options for experimenting with making marks or “writing” with their fingers. Use large paper, paper bags, shaving cream (and fingers), sand, and other materials so children can practice different types of movements and marking in different directions.
