Observe the child with markers and magic drawing boards, an iPad, or a sensory box with sand, rice, or other similar texture.
The adult presents one or two options for experimenting with making marks with a finger or other tool.
The child likes making marks with stamps, and experiments with making impressions with a finger or tool on various surfaces or in different textures.
Encourage early childhood educators and parents to give children many options for experimenting with making marks or “writing” with their fingers. Use large paper, paper bags, shaving cream (and fingers), sand, and other materials so children can practice different types of movements and marking in different directions.
