Goal: Children demonstrate self-expression and creativity in a variety of forms and contexts, including play, visual arts, music, drama, and dance.

Skill Progression: Art

Age: 24-27 Months

Engages in sensory art such as play dough, finger paints, etc.

Situations for Observation of Skill

Provide paper and markers or crayons, as well as sensory art materials.

Elicitation Strategy

Once the drawing is done, take play dough and suggest that you make a sun to put on the picture.

Behavior Observed

The child can roll play dough in imitation and can attempt to flatten it. The child may call his play dough a representation of something.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Although they may be messy, tactile art projects are fun and introduce new categories to the child. If early childhood educators and parents play with the child the child can learn new descriptive vocabulary (soft, squishy, flat, round, etc.) Impress upon early childhood educators and parents the importance of children experiencing different types of art and play materials and textures.
