Conversations begin to be directed to other children, as well as self and adults

Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the child during daily routines with an adult and during play with other children.

Elicitation Strategy

No elicitation needed when child is playing with a peer or sibling.

Behavior Observed

During play the child shows other children what he is doing and involves them in the play conversation.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Encourage parents to remind the child during the activity to “Remember…” to share with others later. Encourage parents to have play dates and early childhood educators to encourage peer play. Children need time with other children, not just adults.
