Answers simple questions about the pictures in the book

Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the child and adult reading familiar books together.

Elicitation Strategy

As you are reading the book, ask questions about the pictures (e.g., “What is he doing here?” Where is he going?” What are these things?”).

Behavior Observed

The child demonstrates knowledge of the items and characters in the book and can remember simple stories.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Children are now able to talk about and retell books, so early childhood educators and parents can let children lead when reading familiar books. Encourage them to let children talk about some of the pictures on the page before they read it. For example, “Tell me what happens on this page.” Or, “What is this thing used for?”
