Recognizes some familiar environmental signs or symbols

Situations for Observation of Skill

Interview adults about the child’s recognition of environmental signs.

Elicitation Strategy

Ask adults what specific signs or symbols the child recognizes in the community (e.g., fast food stops, stop signs, billboards, familiar stores, etc.)

Behavior Observed

Adults report that the child recognizes and names specific signs or symbols in the community.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Encourage parents to point out and name common signs and symbols when they are driving or walking in the community. There are many common words and symbols that families pass every day. Pointing them out can help children learn that these provide people with needed information. They will begin to point them out to their parents and tell them what they say. “That says STOP.”
