Claps with a drumbeat

Situations for Observation of Skill

Have a drum or empty box that can serve as a drum. Have the child beat on the drum while the adult claps along. Then the adult beats on the drum while the child claps along.

Elicitation Strategy

Take turns with beating the drum to demonstrate for the child how to clap to the beat. Vary the beat, starting slow, then a little faster, slower, etc.

Behavior Observed

The child differentiates similar sounds and identifies the right sound to use in a word.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Being able to match a beat is needed to be able to hear syllables in words. Encourage parents to do musical activities with their child. Make simple drums, buy an inexpensive kazoo and have fun making beats!
