Situations for Observation of Skill

Read books with the child and discuss what she knows about what is happening.

Elicitation Strategy

While reading to the child ask questions relating to the book. “What do you think will happen next?” “Do you know what this is?” “Tell me what you know about her.”

Behavior Observed

The child understands the terms being used and uses them in the discussion.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Using the terms know, think, and other similar terms are important because they indicate the child recognizes that her perceptions can be different from others. Encourage early childhood educators and parents to talk about what they think and know and ask the child about her perceptions.
