Observe the child during daily routines. Ask parents what rules they have for toileting, eating, going out, etc.
If the child does not verbalize the rules, ask. “What do you do before you get into bed?” or “What do you need to do after you eat?”
The child takes pride in knowing what she is supposed to do in specific situations.
Encourage families to have a few simple rules such as, taking turns, not hitting, doing chores (one), and speaking nicely to one another. Families need to derive their own rules.
