: Knows simple rules of the family (e.g., pick up toys when done playing)

Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the child during daily routines. Ask parents what rules they have for toileting, eating, going out, etc.

Elicitation Strategy

If the child does not verbalize the rules, ask. “What do you do before you get into bed?” or “What do you need to do after you eat?”

Behavior Observed

The child takes pride in knowing what she is supposed to do in specific situations.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Encourage families to have a few simple rules such as, taking turns, not hitting, doing chores (one), and speaking nicely to one another. Families need to derive their own rules.
