Begins to pedal a tricycle

Situations for Observation of Skill

Have a small tricycle or other pedal toy available.

Elicitation Strategy

Ask the zookeeper to deliver food to the cages.

Behavior Observed

The child alternates pushing with one foot and then the other foot to pedal a tricycle.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Walking and running both involve bilateral movements, but pedaling is slightly different, as it requires alternating force along with movement. If a tricycle is not available, early childhood educators and parents can play a game of try to move my hand. The child lies on the floor and holds her feet up and bent, as if in a sitting position. The adult sits on the floor with one hand on each foot. The child then take turns trying to push the adult’s hands back.
