Observe the child and adult reading familiar and unfamiliar books together.
When a new book is read take time on each page for the child to be able to study the pictures and ask questions. Asking the child a question related to the pictures in the book, (“What do clouds do?”) may stimulate the child to ask a question related to the pictures as well (“What does the sun do?”)
The child asks questions to obtain information (e.g., “What does a bug eat?”)
Encourage parents to make use of the local library. Let the child explore and check out different kinds of books. This will help the child build knowledge of various genres of books and their uses. Early childhood educators and parents often read storybooks, but expository books with pictures of real living and nonliving things stimulate the child’s interest in and curiosity about the world.
