Observe the child and adult reading familiar and unfamiliar books together.
Ask the child to tell you about the different books in his house or ones brought by a visiting adult.
The child talks about how his books are different (e.g., real pictures, stories, etc.)
Encourage parents to make use of the local library. Let the child explore and check out different kinds of books. This will help the child build knowledge of various genres of books and their uses. Early childhood educators and parents often read storybooks, but expository books with pictures of real living and nonliving things stimulate the child’s interest in and curiosity about the world.
