Takes turns

Situations for Observation of Skill

Watch the child in interaction with others, particularly in play activities.

Elicitation Strategy

No elicitation may be needed. If turn taking does not occur spontaneously, the adult can stimulate turn-taking by saying, “My turn.” “Now it’s your turn.” etc. See if the child picks up the pattern once the adult stops prompting.

Behavior Observed

The child takes turns spontaneously. If prompting is needed, it shows that the skill is emerging and is within the child’s capability.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Encourage early childhood educators and parents to model turn-taking throughout the routines or the day. For example, take turns setting silverware on the table; take turns washing body parts; take turns in game play.
