Watch the child in interaction with others, particularly in play activities.
No elicitation may be needed. If turn taking does not occur spontaneously, the adult can stimulate turn-taking by saying, “My turn.” “Now it’s your turn.” etc. See if the child picks up the pattern once the adult stops prompting.
The child takes turns spontaneously. If prompting is needed, it shows that the skill is emerging and is within the child’s capability.
Encourage early childhood educators and parents to model turn-taking throughout the routines or the day. For example, take turns setting silverware on the table; take turns washing body parts; take turns in game play.
