Expresses feelings such as fear, anger, and affection

Situations for Observation of Skill

Read a book with the child related to emotions the characters feel.

Elicitation Strategy

While reading ask about what the characters are feeling and why. Ask the child when she feels like that too.

Behavior Observed

The child takes turns spontaneously. If prompting is needed, it shows that the skill is emerging and is within the child’s capability.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Explain to early childhood educators and parents that being able to label and express emotions helps children learn to handle the feelings they experience. If they can talk about them, it lessens the feeling of being overwhelmed by the feelings. Adults can then help children find ways to appropriately handle these feelings.
