Have the adult be the “artist” and draw what the child wants.
The adult asks the child, “What should I draw?” The adult then begins to draw what the child requested, but also says, “What else do I need?” In this way, the child dictates the details that are needed.
The child says specifically what he wants and where he wants the different aspects to go on the drawing.
Children do not yet have the skill to draw the ideas they have that they want to draw. Having early childhood educators and parents draw is one way for them to see how what is in their minds can be translated into a picture on paper. It also demonstrates the sequence of turning lines into a representation.
