Goal: Children identify and use common shapes and concepts about position during play and other activities.

Skill Progression: Composes geometric shapes

Manipulates individual shapes and randomly arranges them, but can’t combine them to make a larger shape

Situations for Observation of Skill

During playtime have a variety of shape blocks, measuring cups (without long handles) or stacking cups, and a shape puzzle, trucks, small people and farm animals in a bag or two.

Elicitation Strategy

No elicitation needed.

Behavior Observed

The child will line up, stack and arrange blocks, but not combine them to make new shapes.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Children are beginning to make representations with blocks. They see the blocks as individual shapes, but they do not see the blocks as part of larger shapes.
