Recognizes some environmental text

Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the child in a community setting or interview parent.

Elicitation Strategy

No elicitation needed.

Behavior Observed

The child recognizes familiar signs in the community (e.g., the grocery, fast food, stop sign, etc.)

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

When out in the community parents should point out environmental text and symbols. For example, exit signs, stop signs, names of familiar stores and restroom labels are all seen frequently, so children can begin to recognize and “read” them.
