Starts to memorize words, lines, or whole segments of a favorite book

Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the child “reading” a favorite book to an adult or another child.

Elicitation Strategy

Ask parents about the child’s response to familiar logos, words, etc. on locations they visit or see frequently.

Behavior Observed

When sharing a familiar book, the child recites parts word-for-word.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

When out in the community parents should point out environmental text and symbols. For example, exit signs, stop signs, names of familiar stores and restroom labels are all seen frequently, so children can begin to recognize and “read” them.
