Notices print in the environment and asks what it “says”

Situations for Observation of Skill

Interview the adult about what environmental print the child notices and asks him about. For example, the child may ask, “What does that say?”

Elicitation Strategy

Ask adults which signs and what questions the child asks them about environmental signs.

Behavior Observed

The child notices print on signs and products and wants to know what the words “say.”

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Parents should read aloud information on product containers, billboards, signs, and store labels, while pointing to words as they are read. Children will begin to associate the words with their meanings, recognize them, and “read” them to their parents when they see them. This process motivates children to want to learn to read.
