Situations for Observation of Skill

Have paper and pencil or markers for the child.

Elicitation Strategy

Let the child draw a picture of his choice. Ask the child to write his name on the picture.

Behavior Observed

The child tries to use straight lines (both horizontal and vertical) combined with curves and loops to represent separate letters. The child understands that letters are separate entities, but may connect the loops.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Many parents do not think about having the child write his name at home. But learning to write his name is one of the first ways that the child discovers that letters represent sounds. Parents need to give the child many opportunities to write his name or other favorite words. Identify letters in family member’s names and make the sounds of the letters in the names.
