Ask the child during an experience where stating your name is appropriate.

Ask the child to draw a picture, or alternatively, the adult can draw a picture of the child. When done ask his first and last name so you can write it on the top of the paper, and this way the child will know it is his to keep.

Children at this level begin to understand that they not only have a first name, they have a last name too. This indicates a growing understanding of their place in a family.

Parents do not always talk about last names with young children. Help them understand that children can learn that they are part of a family and mothers and/or fathers share their last names. This enables children to see relationships among family members. If names are different parents need to explain this.
