Provide the materials needed to create special spaces.

The child may not spontaneously think of making a special space, but the suggestion of making a “cave,” “tent,” “house,” etc. may stimulate her imagination. Ask the child “what do we need to do to make it?”

Will generate ideas and implement them, adding new elements to make the space more special.

Children love little spaces of their own. Parents can help them by moving furniture, providing a sheet to throw over a table, or letting children use pillows and furniture to create something from their imagination. If early childhood educators and parents “play along” they can enjoy the dramatic play that consequently develops in the setting.
