Remembers and looks for specific photos or illustrations in books (i.e. favorite pictures)

Situations for Observation of Skill

Have familiar books and/or photographs available.

Elicitation Strategy

The adult can ask the child to show her favorite part of a book. If looking at photographs, ask which the child likes best and why.

Behavior Observed

The child has clear preferences and reasons for these preferences.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Encourage early childhood educators and parents to talk about what they like in different books and pictures and ask the child for her likes and dislikes. Tell parents not to judge their child’s preferences, as this will discourage independent thinking.
