Observe the child demonstrating the songs, finger plays, and rhymes she has learned.

Ask what songs the child knows. Say, “I don’t know that one. How does it go?” If needed, start to sing and see if the child joins in. Clap or play a drum to accompany the child as you let the child take over.

The child takes pride in her ability to remember the song and demonstrate it.

Encourage early childhood educators and parents to support the creative verbal efforts of the child, as well as other skills. Suggest adults sing songs and learn finger plays to teach the child. The child loves the combination of motor and singing and doing it with an adult makes it special.
