Watch how the child handles a challenging task. The task can be a household task or a complicated play activity.
Observe the child trying to sort the laundry, set the table, or make the preparations for bed. Alternatively, ask the child to set up a dramatic play situation, “Let’s play house in the kitchen. What should we make?”
The child demonstrates the desire to plan, organize and lead the activity. Even if the child needs assistance, the child will want to continue the activity.
Help parents understand how to involve their young child in challenging activities at home. Children learn sequencing, categorizing, planning, imagining and creating.
