Transfers food from side-to-side in mouth

Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the child eating.

Elicitation Strategy

No elicitation needed.

Behavior Observed

The bolus of food can be seen as a bulge, first on one side of the mouth, then on the other, indicating transfer of food.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Help early childhood educators and parents understand how using both sides of the mouth is important, not only for chewing, but also for speech. Moving food in the mouth helps develop tongue control for speech sounds.
