Situations for Observation of Skill

Interview adult. Toileting is dependent on family expectations and background, and cultural differences. Type of diaper used also impacts feeling of wetness, so children who wear pull-ups may not feel wet.

Elicitation Strategy

Ask adult about the child’s urinary and bowel habits.

Behavior Observed

98% of children are toilet trained by this age.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Early childhood educators and parents can encourage children to assume responsibility for bathroom care with little supervision.
