Interview adult. Toileting is dependent on family expectations and background, and cultural differences. Type of diaper used also impacts feeling of wetness, so children who wear pull-ups may not feel wet.

Elicitation Strategy

Ask adult about the child’s urinary and bowel habits.

Behavior Observed

98% of children are toilet trained by this age.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Early childhood educators and parents can encourage children to assume responsibility for bathroom care with little supervision.
