Knows some letters in own name

Situations for Observation of Skill

Give each child a card with his name on it. (A small group of children is best).

Elicitation Strategy

The adult gives the child his name card and asks him to read the card and say the letters in his name.

Behavior Observed

The child names at least some of the letters in his name.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Early childhood educators and parents can give children reasons to write their name on their papers, on cards or letters, on notes for others that are dictated to adults, and so on. Provide support when needed and help children associate the letters with their sounds. When reading books, ask children to find rhyming words or words with the same sounds.
