Read a simple rhyming alphabet book, such as A Silly Rhyming Alphabet Book about Animals from A to Z by Simone DaCosta or Chicka Chicka ABC by Bill Martin, Jr.
The adult picks three words from the text, including two that start with the same sounds, and asks the child to pick the words that start with the same sounds.
The child hears and identifies words with the same initial sounds.
Early childhood educators and parents can give children reasons to write their name on their papers, on cards or letters, on notes for others that are dictated to adults, and so on. Provide support when needed and help children associate the letters with their sounds. When reading books, ask children to find rhyming words or words with the same sounds.
