Dramatizes favorite stories and events

Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the child in dramatic play with a theme that is familiar to the child, a favorite book or movie, or a familiar event (birthday party, doctor visit, etc.).

Elicitation Strategy

Provide props to remind the child of the story or the event (e.g., Toy Story characters, birthday hats and play dough for cakes, Dr.’s kit).

Behavior Observed

The child sequences actions or events in the story (making a cake, baking it, eating it).

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Encourage early childhood educators and parents to help children make props for favorite stories or movies. Provide paper, play dough, boxes, and toy characters or dress up outfits. Children of this age understand narrative and telling a story. Early childhood educators and parents can become part of the action by being one of the characters!
