Observe the child sharing a book with an adult, or other child. Use a book that has clear emotional expressions on the characters’ faces. Books with emotions expressed through color can also be used.

If the child does not spontaneously talk about the emotions, the adult can ask, “What does his face tell you?” or “Look at the colors in this picture. Do you think this story is happy or sad?”

The child sees emotions in the pictures.

Early childhood educators and parents can talk about the art work in books and what the art work is meant to express about the characters and story. For instance, “Look at these dark clouds. I think maybe something scary is coming.”
