Observe the child in dramatic play with a theme that is familiar to the child, a favorite book or movie, or a familiar event (birthday party, doctor visit, etc.).

Provide props to remind the child of the story or the event (e.g., Toy Story characters, birthday hats and play dough for cakes, Dr.’s kit). When the child is not looking, hide one of the objects and ask the child what is missing.

The child will recall the item that is missing.

Encourage early childhood educators and parents to help children make props for favorite stories or movies. Provide paper, play dough, boxes, and toy characters or dress up outfits. Children of this age understand narrative and telling a story. Early childhood educators and parents can become part of the action by being one of the characters!
