Observe the child in a circle or small group activity in childcare or at a park with other children.

Elicitation is not needed in a childcare setting as many opportunities will be seen. If in a park or play area, the adult can start a group activity and then step back and watch. For instance, introduce several trucks and shovels and see how high a pile of sand all the children can make.

The child watches others, imitates them, starts to talk about what they are doing, and may give directions to the other children.

Encourage parents to give the child plenty of time with other children. This time enables them to learn about how to get along with others. Adult supervision and support is still needed at times.
