Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the child’s reaction when rewards or punishments are given out during the day (loss of privilege, removal from activity, removal of desired item, etc.).

Behavior Observed

When rewarded the child smiles and says thank you or seeks more reinforcement. When reproved or disciplined, the child frowns or demonstrates anger, but he will abide by the consequences.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

It is important for early childhood educators and parents to acknowledge children when they understand and accept the consequences of wrongdoing. Adults can comment, “I appreciate that you know what you did was wrong. I think that will help you think next time something like this occurs.”
