Observe the adult and child reading a book about unusual animals or insects in nature.

The adult asks the child questions, such as “When do you think this animal sleeps?” “How does the insect get onto the leaf way up in the tree?”

The child demonstrates understanding of time and causal questions by providing answers, even if the answers are inaccurate.

Children learn a variety of time concepts when early childhood educators and parents talk about “when” specific events happen. Ask children questions about activities during the day or week, during the month, or about holidays. Ask children questions about when specific activities occur.
