Do the same with an ‘I Spy a First Sound’ game with first letters. The adult names a word and the child finds an object that starts with the same sound.
The adult changes the game to ‘I Spy a First Sound.’ The adult says, “I spy something that starts with the first sound of basket.” The child then finds the ball.
The child hears the first sounds and matches them to other words with the same first sounds.
Talk about the sounds in words and how the sounds are alike. For example, “Mommy and Maria start with the same sound, ‘mmm’ and the same letter, M. Point these out as you read books together or when the child makes an alliterative statement. For example, if the child says, “I’m going sledding in the snow on Saturday,” the adult can say, “Listen to all the words that start with S that you said!”
